The Work of Karel Engliš

Karel Engliš (1880–1961) was a distinguished economist and legal theorist. Appointed Professor of Economics at the Czech Technical University in Brno (today’s Brno University of Technology) in 1917, he later played a key role—together with František Weyr—in the founding of Masaryk University, serving as its first Rector in 1919. At Masaryk University he developed the teleological school of economics and, in cooperation with Weyr, helped establish the Brno normative school inspired by Hans Kelsen’s theory, which gained international recognition.

A prominent political figure of the First Czechoslovak Republic, Engliš served in several governments and, as Minister of Finance and Governor of the Czechoslovak National Bank (1934–1938), contributed significantly to the country’s monetary policy. After 1948 he was forced to leave his post as Rector of Charles University and Prague itself, spending the final years of his life in seclusion in his native village of Hrabyně in Silesia.

The series presents previously unpublished works and manuscripts by Karel Engliš. The companion Supplementum series publishes bibliographies of Engliš’s works as well as scholarly studies examining his intellectual legacy.
