Masaryk University Press at the 35th Autumn Book Fair in Havlíčkův Brod
You are cordially invited to the book launch event of the Czech translation of The Song of the Cell, a new work by world-renowned physician, scientist, and writer Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize winner and author of the bestsellers The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer and The Gene: The Story of Life.
The event will take place as part of the Books in Brno festival on Saturday, November 29, at 15.00 in the conference Hall of the Moravian Library in Brno, Kounicova 65a.
In his new book, Mukherjee captivatingly tells the story of the discovery of the basic unit of life – the cell. With his typical combination of scientific erudition and storytelling talent, he shows how cellular processes shape the body, health and disease, and how understanding cells opens the way to a new type of medicine based on cell therapy.
The book launch will be followed by a lecture by Jan Křivánek from the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, with a title Orchestrating Change: Constant Change as the Basis of Stability in Living Systems. His team recently caught the attention of the global scientific community with a breakthrough achievement: they managed to "program" stem cells to transform into cells that form dental tissue by directly intervening in their genome. This discovery opens up new avenues for regenerative medicine and, like The Song of the Cell, brings hope that one day we will be able to repair even complex tissues with our own bodies.
The meeting of literature and science will offer a unique insight into how the cellular world is becoming an inspiration not only for medicine, but also for the way we think about life itself.
Admission is free.
